In my view, Social Communication–a strategic, methodical approach to communicating with informal as well as formal groups within an organization or market that’s not to be confused with “Social Media”–represents the great breakthrough opportunity for internal communication today.

Finding the “tribes”–the informal groups and leaders that connect and drive much of organizational activity, and engaging them as channels, advocates and participants in the process of communication, is a powerful way to generate change while supporting existing productivity.

By emphasising people–tribes and leaders and their influential connections–social communication focuses on results, instead of on tools and toys.

My approach to social communication can make a difference:

  • At an organisational level in identifying informal groups and their leaders, and in developing broad strategies that reflect a social communication approach
  • To an agency or consultancy that is looking to deliver more impact to clients while at the same time reducing overhead and overload
  • To a project or division in setting up, managing and executing a communication strategy and infrastructure that combines traditional media with the precision and power made possible by the effective management of word of mouth.
